On a stormy and very rainy day the
Just at that time, Huria Matenga opened her curtains. She saw Henry Squirrell crashing against the rocks. She quickll ran to tell her husband Hemi and Hohepata, their friend. How the Kiwi Lost its Wings
Tane Mahuta had to ask Cuckoo to live on the forest floor.
“Sorry Tane. I’m building a nest. I can’t leave it.”
After, Tane asked Morepork.
He said, “I love the light. I can’t go on the dark forest floor.”
Then Tane asked Tui and he said, “I’m afraid of what enemies I’ll have.”
“Pukeko, will you?”
“No Tane. I like to keep my feet fry.”
Finally he asked Kiwi. “Yes Tane, I will.”
After, Tane Mahuta said to Morepork, “You will never live in the light. You will always fly to the darkest places in the forest.”
“Tui, you will always heve the mark of the coward.”
“Pukeko, you like to keep your feet dry. From now you will live in the swamp and get your feet wet.”
“Kiwi, you did a good thing but you will lose your beautiful colours.
From that day kiwi still stays on the ground.
